Where Have We Been?

We know, you haven't heard from us lately. We haven't called, we haven't written... But we have been making pizzas!

We started our long awaited mobile wood-fired pizza business, IL FORNO MOBILE (The Mobile Oven) here in the Hudson Valley region of New York a short while ago, and we are having the time of our lives - and the pizza's pretty good too, if we do say so ourselves!

But don't take our word for it - For the remainder of this season, Cary & Lillian's IL FORNO MOBILE (presented by passion-4-pizza.com) can be found at the Heart of the Hudson Valley Farmers Market every Saturday from September 29th through October 27th. The Market is at Cluett-Schanz Park on Route 9W in Milton, NY from 9AM to 2PM!

We WON'T be there on Sept. 22.

October 6th is an all-day Bounty Festival in the park, and we’ll be serving up the pizzas from 10AM to 7PM on that day! The Festival would make a fine day trip if you're anywhere nearby – take the NYS Thruway to New Paltz, go east on Rte 299, then south on 9W for 6.5 miles (or use your GPS!).

Our www.fornomobile.com site isn't yet built (making dough takes up a lot of time!) but click the link below to visit our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/fornomobile)! Don't forget to "Like" us - and we'll keep you updated on where IL FORNO MOBILE is going to be next!

P4P Interviewed in California Beer and Pizza Magazine!

We just opened our copy of the Spring 2012 issue of California Beer and Pizza Magazine to read the interview they did with us. It's pretty good!

Imagine our surprise when in the same issue we also found an interview with our friend and wood-fired pizza oven mentor, Joseph Pergolizzi of The Fire Within! And that interview was conducted by Albert Grande of Pizza Therapy! It's a festival of pizza synchronicity over at California Beer and Pizza...

Why there's no DiFara page on Passion-4-Pizza.com

We like DiFara. We admire Domenico DiMarco for his dedication to his craft, his skill, the quality of his ingredients. We appreciate his showmanship. And we like his excellent pizza, when he doesn't burn it all to hell.

And when it comes to the generation that made Brooklyn pizza what it is, Dom is pretty much the last man standing. He almost wasn't - after an auto accident followed by knee surgery a couple of years ago, he rehabbed the knee by walking behind his beloved counter, making pizzas as usual.

It's great pizza, especially if you love olive oil and basil. And we've heard (haven't been there for quite a while) that Mr. DiMarco isn't burning as many as he used to. It's worth the price. Is it worth the wait? That's up to you. We waited two hours and 40 minutes for our pizza.

It's great fun watching Dom make pizza, especially that impressive little bit when he pulls the pizza out of the oven with his bare hands. Health code violation? Who cares?

But really, doesn't DiFara get enough hype without us? Slice founder Adam Kuban turned us (and most of the pizzerati) on to DiFara years ago. Adam loves DiFara's pizza. Every other pizza blogger in NY has written extensively about DiFara. The place gets regular mentions in magazines, on TV shows, even a recent special on the Travel Channel, and a reputation among hipsters that says "if you don't love DiFara, don't talk to me about pizza." 7,602 likes (as of this writing) on Facebook. If you’re not already aware of DiFara’s, you’re not paying attention.

When we started passion-4-pizza.com, we realized that most great pizzerias in New York were already well-covered - so we'd write about those that were either our favorites or really representative of their neighborhood.

Great as it is, DiFara's isn't in either category.

It's not a favorite for a few reasons:

  1. too trendy.
  2. no real system. Dom's daughter Maggie with a notebook and pencil isn't really enough for a place this crowded.
  3. not particularly clean.
  4. the wait, with one qualification: if we knew we were going to get an unburned pizza, DiFara's pizza would be worth a three-hour wait. But it's a gamble.

So we'll eat there, but there's no DiFara page on Passion-4-Pizza.com.
